ARC Review: Fable

Welcome to a world made dangerous by the sea and by those who wish to profit from it. Where a young girl must find her place and her family while trying to survive in a world built for men.

As the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home seventeen-year-old Fable has ever known. It’s been four years since the night she watched her mother drown during an unforgiving storm. The next day her father abandoned her on a legendary island filled with thieves and little food. To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father.

But her father’s rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him and Fable soon finds that West isn’t who he seems. Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they’re going to stay alive. Fable takes you on a spectacular journey filled with romance, intrigue and adventure.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Fable hit the ground running and I was immediately enthralled! We follow Fable and quickly see how quick-witted she needs to be to survive. With most young adult fantasy these days, there tends to be a lot of world-building and info dumping, so I appreciated Young’s confidence in her readers to keep up.

There is a lot of mystery around her father and the death of her mother that kept me turning the page. I loved the journey back to her father and the way the writing showed us how she was affected by her parents absence. I am still so intrigued by her mother and I hope to get more answers in the sequel.

Apart from the main plot, we had a gorgeous crew accompanying Fable. We have new friends and a love interest onboard the Marigold. To avoid spoilers, I won’t get into names! There is a plot twist among the crew that I adored.

There were only a couple things that slightly bothered me. There was a bit too much mystery. Even though I am very invested, I was let down by how much information we were given. Especially around her mother. The other thing was the romance. I am living for it, but sometimes Fable’s love interest can be quite hot-and-cold and overprotective without giving much back in return. I still quite like them, so maybe issues will get cleared up in future installments.

This was such an adventure and I am happy to say it isn’t over! I will be diving into the sequel, Namesake, next month. I cannot wait.

Thank you to Titan Books and Netgalley for the arc! This title was released January 26, 2021.
